1871 Proof Eagle Pattern - J-1173, Gilt
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
A gilt copper striking of the Liberty Head eagle design, this pattern recreates the golden appearance of the $10 coin through gold plating applied over a copper base. At the eagle's impressive diameter, the gilding creates a convincing facsimile of the production gold coin that allowed design evaluation without the expense of actual gold strikings. Gilt eagle patterns are among the most visually striking pieces in the Trade Dollar era program, combining the size of America's largest standard gold coin with the visual warmth of gilded copper.
