The 1871 Proof Eagle Pattern - J-1173 is a proof eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1871 eagle dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1871 off-metal strikings from the regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. Five are known in copper, one of them gilt; NGC lists gilt examples separately. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1315 and Adams-Woodin 1079. Cataloged as PCGS #61436.
