The 1871 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1178 is a proof double eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1871 double eagle dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1871 off-metal strikings from the regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. Only the Woodin (1914 ANS exhibition), Newcomer and Farouk nickel piece is believed to exist. It is struck in nickel with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1320 and Adams-Woodin 1078. Cataloged as PCGS #61441.
