The 1871 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1176 is a proof double eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1871 double eagle dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1871 off-metal strikings from the regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials.
