Description
The copper companion to J-1041, this cent pattern reproduces the Indian Head obverse and oak wreath reverse in the standard composition of production cents. Copper strikings served as visual baselines throughout the Trade Dollar pattern program, allowing Mint officials to compare how familiar designs appeared in the proposed standard silver alloy versus the established bronze composition. The piece documents the systematic approach William Barber brought to metallurgical testing during this pivotal period of American coinage reform.
