Description
The 1871 Proof Cent Pattern - J-1042 is a proof cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1871 Indian Head cent dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1871 off-metal strikings from the regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. Two are confirmed in aluminum, one ex Brenner (shown at the 1914 ANS exhibition) and Brand, the other ex Woodin and Newcomer. It is struck in aluminum with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1176 and Adams-Woodin 1208. Cataloged as PCGS #61301.
