Description

The 1871 Assay Commission medal JK-AC-9 in bronze presents the Archimedes design with an inscription identifying J. Pollock — James Pollock, who served as Director of the Mint from 1861 to 1866 and again from 1869 to 1873. Pollock was a consequential figure in American numismatic history, best known for championing the addition of IN GOD WE TRUST to the nation's coinage during the Civil War. His identification on this Assay Commission medal reflects his active involvement in the medal program during his second term as Director. The Archimedes figure on JK-AC-9 depicts the ancient scientist in a moment of intellectual discovery, surrounded by the instruments of metallurgical investigation. Chief Engraver William Barber rendered the classical subject with attention to period-appropriate drapery and setting while maintaining the clarity of composition necessary for a medal that would be struck in multiple metals. The inscription identifying Pollock adds a layer of contemporary specificity to the timeless classical imagery. Director Pollock's influence on the Assay Commission medal program extended beyond mere administrative oversight. As a former Pennsylvania governor and a man of considerable political and cultural sophistication, Pollock took an active interest in the artistic quality of Mint products, encouraging the engraving department to elevate the Assay Commission medals from utilitarian tokens of service to genuine works of numismatic art.
