Description
The 1870 (S) Liberty Head Eagle is a Gold Eagle minted at the San Francisco Mint, within the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 8,000 eagles dated 1870. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll above the eagle. First year of Carson City eagle production. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.72 grams, 27 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8659.
