Description
Part of the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series, the 1870 (CC) Liberty Head Eagle is a Gold Eagle from the Carson City Mint. With a mintage of 5,908, this is an extremely rare issue — ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 33% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. First Carson City eagle, beginning one of numismatics' most collectible gold coin series by mintmark. Coined at the Carson City Mint in Nevada, which operated for just 23 years (1870–1893) and produced coins now prized for their scarcity and Western provenance. S. numismatics.
