Description
Classified as a die trial rather than an essai, J-924 was struck in copper with a reeded edge using quarter pattern dies. Die trials differ from essais in their purpose: where essais are deliberate demonstrations of proposed coinage designs, die trials are technical impressions produced to evaluate die condition, striking pressure, and metal flow characteristics. The copper composition was ideal for die testing because its excellent malleability reveals the finest details and earliest signs of die wear more clearly than harder metals. J-924 and its two companions represent the technical foundation upon which the artistic quarter pattern series was built.
