Description
Opening the extensive fifty-two variety quarter pattern subseries, J-876 features William Barber's Seated Liberty obverse with thirteen stars surrounding the figure of Liberty seated on a rock, supporting a shield with her right hand and holding an olive branch in her left, a liberty pole rising behind the shield. The reverse displays the distinctive Standard Silver design: an open agricultural wreath of cotton and corn enclosing 25 CENTS with the date 1870 below and the word STANDARD at the upper border. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, this piece anchors the first of nine design groups that systematically explore every combination of obverse, reverse, metal, and edge treatment for the quarter denomination under Mint Director Linderman's ambitious coinage reform proposal.
