Description
The plain-edge copper companion in the eighth group, J-921 carries the single-star headband Liberty Head and regular-issue eagle reverse in a format that maximizes the medallic impact of both dies. Copper plain-edge patterns from the 1870 series were struck with meticulous care, receiving multiple impressions from the proof dies to ensure complete design transfer and the deep mirror fields that characterize the finest pattern coins. The absence of edge reeding allows the natural copper color to flow uninterrupted around the entire periphery, creating a warm frame for the cool-toned proof surfaces within.
