Description
Presenting the three-star cap Liberty Head and regular-issue eagle reverse on a copper planchet with a plain edge, J-909 offers a medallic interpretation of this transitional die combination. The plain edge treatment eliminates the last production-oriented feature from what is otherwise an experiment in combining new with familiar elements. Copper plain-edge quarters from the 1870 series develop a handsome chocolate brown patina over decades of careful storage, and the finest surviving examples exhibit deep mirror fields contrasting with sharply frosted devices in the classic cameo proof aesthetic.
