Description

The plain-edge silver version of J-906, this quarter pattern combines the three-star cap Liberty Head obverse with the regular-issue eagle reverse in a configuration that reads almost as a transitional piece between old and new coinage. Viewed from the reverse, this coin appears identical to an 1870 Seated Liberty quarter; only when turned over does Barber's proposed redesign reveal itself. Such transitional die marriages had historical precedent in American numismatics, as similar obverse-only changes had accompanied past design transitions, and Linderman contemplated a phased rollout following this model.
