Description

The plain-edge silver version of the single-star headband Liberty Head with STANDARD wreath reverse, J-901 pairs the same die combination as J-900 with a smooth edge that gives the coin a more formal, medal-like character. Plain-edge silver patterns from the 1870 Standard Silver program tend to be scarcer than their reeded-edge counterparts, as the reeded versions were the primary pieces included in collector sets. The single-star headband motif appears across multiple denominations in the 1870 series, creating a unified visual identity that would have given Linderman's proposed coinage a cohesive family resemblance.

Rarity Notes

R-7. Extremely rare, estimated 4-12 examples survive.
