Description
Closing the fourth design group, J-899 strikes the inscribed-diadem Liberty Head obverse and STANDARD wreath reverse in aluminum with a plain edge. As the sixth variety completing this obverse-reverse combination, J-899 marks the end of Linderman's exploration of his most classically styled Liberty portrait for the quarter denomination. The plain-edge aluminum combination produces the lightest and most delicate piece in the group, a coin-like object that challenges every sensory expectation associated with a quarter dollar. Surviving aluminum patterns from 1870 frequently display the minor surface oxidation and occasional small pits characteristic of this chemically reactive metal.
Rarity Notes
