Description
J-894 shows a Liberty head in a plain tiara inscribed LIBERTY, without the stars of J-888's cap, with her hair gathered in a bun. It belongs to the 1870 Standard Silver patterns, the lighter silver coins that Mint Director James Pollock proposed in his report for 1869 as a replacement for the fractional paper notes, and the Mint again sold sets of them to collectors for $15. On this obverse Liberty faces right in a tiara inscribed LIBERTY, with no stars and her hair tied in a bun, above a scroll reading IN GOD WE TRUST. Its reverse is the new design of 1870: the denomination and the date sit inside an open wreath of cotton and corn, with STANDARD in small letters at the top. USPatterns.com calls it fairly common, on planchets of about 77 and about 84 grains. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-5. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1001, Adams-Woodin 970 and Taxay EP715. Cataloged as PCGS #61138.
