Description
A remarkable addition to the third design group, J-893a was struck in nickel using the three-star cap Liberty Head obverse and STANDARD wreath reverse dies. Nickel was not part of the standard three-metal matrix applied to most 1870 quarter patterns, making this an exceptional variant whose existence indicates special interest in the metal's potential for the quarter denomination. The harder nickel composition produced notably sharper detail than softer metals, and the slightly yellowish cast of pure nickel distinguishes this piece from both the cool gray of silver and the bright white of aluminum. A contemporary Coin World article documented this unique pattern, underscoring its significance among 1870 quarter varieties.
