Description

Introducing the third obverse design in the quarter series, J-888 features a right-facing Liberty Head wearing a Phrygian cap ornamented with three stars, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounding the bust and a scroll inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST below. The reverse retains the STANDARD agricultural wreath enclosing 25 CENTS with the date below. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, this design represents William Barber's departure from the traditional Seated Liberty toward a more modern portrait approach that he would continue refining over the next two decades. The three-star cap is a distinctive hallmark of this particular obverse, distinguishing it from the other Liberty Head variants in the series.
