Description
The plain-edge silver counterpart to J-882, this pattern combines Barber's Seated Liberty obverse with the regular-issue eagle reverse. A plain edge on what would otherwise appear to be a standard quarter was a deliberate experimental variable, testing whether the public might accept a familiar design without the traditional reeded edge. The regular-issue reverse lent this piece a hybrid character: viewed from the back it resembled an ordinary quarter, while the front displayed Linderman's proposed new portrait of Liberty amid thirteen stars.
