Description
Beginning the second design group, J-882 retains Barber's Seated Liberty obverse but introduces the regular-issue With Motto eagle reverse used on circulating Seated Liberty quarters since 1866. The eagle clutches an olive branch and arrows beneath a scroll inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This die marriage tested whether Linderman's new obverse could be seamlessly paired with the familiar reverse that the public already recognized, an important practical consideration for minimizing disruption during a coinage transition. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, J-882 represents the most production-ready configuration in the group.
