Description
This proof dime pattern from 1868 begins a ten-variety series that represents the most extensive dime experimentation in the Reconstruction era. The significant number of dime varieties for this year indicates the Mint was seriously evaluating design alternatives for the denomination, in anticipation of the broader coinage redesign that would eventually produce new dime designs in the 1870s and 1890s. The Seated Liberty dime had been in continuous production since 1837, and by 1868 its design was well established but increasingly seen as dated compared to European coinage.
