Description

This 1868-dated octagonal gold quarter dollar is Breen-Gillio BG-799S, a Period Two piece of California fractional gold. NGC lists it with an Indian head on the obverse. Stack's Bowers catalogue notes treat BG-799S as a backdated piece, probably made around 1881 to 1883. It is attributed to Christopher Ferdinand Mohrig. Breen and Gillio put the jewelers' issues of 1858-1882 (1859-1882 in their first edition) into Period Two; most were lighter than their face value and were sold as charms and keepsakes, until the Secret Service enforced the 1864 ban on private coinage in 1883. Catalogue number: BG-799S. PCGS number 10645.
