Description

Combining two distinct die varieties on a single coin, this 1867 Indian Head Cent carries both a rim cud at position 02 and a repunched date — the 67 of 1867 punched over itself, designated 67/67. Cuds form when a section of the die rim fractures and separates completely, leaving a cavity that fills with metal during striking to produce a raised featureless mass on the finished coin. Position 02 places this cud near the top of the obverse rim. The repunched date is an entirely separate manufacturing anomaly: during die preparation, the date numerals were impressed into the die twice, with the second punch slightly offset from the first, leaving traces of the original impression beneath the final digits. Dual-variety coins like this are prized by collectors because each error originated from a different stage of the die's life — the repunched date during initial die preparation and the cud during later production as the die fatigued. The 1867 Indian Head Cent was struck during the Reconstruction era in the early bronze composition that replaced the earlier copper-nickel alloy in 1864.
