Description

This variant of the 1866 two-cent pattern differs from J-458 in composition or minor die characteristics. The two-cent denomination was in its third year of production when this pattern was struck, and its shield obverse design had become the template for the motto's placement on other denominations. Longacre's shield motif — bearing IN GOD WE TRUST on a prominently displayed banner — proved so successful on the two-cent piece that it directly influenced the Shield Nickel design being developed simultaneously in 1866. The reverse retains the neat wheat wreath and TWO CENTS legend. This pattern may test a slightly different alloy formulation, as the Mint periodically experimented with copper alloy ratios to optimize striking quality and reduce die wear.
