Description

A proof striking of the Judd-458 two-cent pattern, produced with polished dies and carefully prepared planchets to showcase the design under ideal conditions. The two-cent piece had been the flagship denomination for the IN GOD WE TRUST motto since 1864, when public sentiment during the Civil War spurred its inclusion on American coinage. By 1866, the motto's presence on the two-cent piece was well established, and this proof pattern demonstrates continued refinement of the die work. The bold shield obverse and delicate wheat wreath reverse are rendered with exceptional clarity in the proof format, highlighting Longacre's skilled engraving. Proof patterns of this denomination were struck in limited quantities for inclusion in pattern sets assembled for collectors, government officials, and foreign dignitaries.
