Description
A business strike of the 1866 two-cent piece pattern, continuing the evolution of the denomination that had introduced IN GOD WE TRUST to American coinage in 1864. The obverse displays Longacre's distinctive Union shield design with the motto on a scroll above and the date below, while the reverse features a wheat wreath enclosing the denomination. The two-cent piece holds a unique distinction as the first United States coin to carry the national motto, preceding its adoption on all other denominations by two years. By 1866, the motto was so well established on the two-cent piece that these patterns test refinements to die quality or minor design adjustments rather than fundamental motto placement. Struck in the standard 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc composition established for the denomination in 1864.
