Description
Progressing deeper into the experimental alloy sequence, J-495 tests a composition that may incorporate metals at the margins of practical coinage use. The Mint's willingness to test even unlikely candidates demonstrates the thoroughness of the 1866 program and the high stakes involved in launching a major new denomination. A poor alloy choice undermined public confidence in the new coin — Americans were already suspicious of base-metal coinage after decades of using precious-metal coins, and only the severe wartime shortage of silver had created the opening for nickel and bronze denominations. Every alloy test contributed to building the case that base-metal five-cent coins could be practical, attractive, and durable.
