1866 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-493
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
J-493 represents one of the later alloy experiments in the comprehensive Shield Nickel testing series. By this stage of the program, the Mint had established that the adopted copper-nickel composition performed well, and these additional tests was motivated by Congressional interest in specific alloys or by the lobbying efforts of particular mining interests. The nickel mining industry, concentrated in the Lancaster Gap region of Pennsylvania, had significant political influence and a natural interest in maximizing nickel content in the new coinage — every ton of nickel consumed by the Mint represented revenue for the mines. Some pattern compositions may reflect these commercial pressures alongside genuine metallurgical inquiry.
