Description

J-490 closes the first third of the Shield Nickel alloy testing series, having progressed through approximately eighteen compositions since the adopted design was first struck as J-473. By this point in the program, the Mint had accumulated substantial data on how various copper-nickel, pure nickel, copper, aluminum, tin, and brass alloys responded to the Shield dies. The results consistently validated the 75/25 copper-nickel blend specified in the authorizing legislation — it struck well, wore evenly, resisted tarnishing, and produced the distinctive pale silvery appearance that distinguished the new denomination from other coins in circulation. The remaining patterns in the series (J-491 onward) would continue testing increasingly unusual alloy formulations, but the case for copper-nickel was already strong.
