Description

Progressing through the alloy series, J-484 tests yet another metallic formulation on the Shield Nickel dies. The cost of producing these pattern coins was trivial compared to the economic stakes involved — the five-cent nickel was destined to become one of the highest-mintage denominations in American coinage, with tens of millions struck annually. Choosing the wrong alloy could result in massive production problems, excessive die costs, or public rejection of coins that looked unappealing or wore poorly. The investment in comprehensive alloy testing represented a small insurance premium against potentially costly mistakes. Each pattern in this series, including J-484, contributed to the body of evidence that validated the final selection of the 75/25 copper-nickel blend.
