Description

Continuing the methodical progression through experimental alloys for the five-cent denomination, J-479 represents another data point in the Mint's comprehensive testing program. The Shield Nickel design was Longacre's response to the practical challenge of creating a coin that served as a successful replacement for the silver half dime in everyday commerce. The half dime had effectively disappeared from circulation during the Civil War due to the premium on silver, and the new nickel five-cent piece needed to fill that void with a base-metal coin that would circulate freely. The proof format of this pattern displays the design with exceptional clarity, but the true test was how each alloy performed when struck at production speeds on planchets cut from commercially available strip metal.
