Description
Struck in yet another experimental alloy, this proof Shield Nickel pattern demonstrates the remarkable breadth of the Mint's materials testing program. The search for an optimal five-cent coin alloy was driven by both economic and practical considerations — the coin needed to contain far less than five cents worth of metal (unlike earlier silver half dimes) while still being durable enough for years of circulation. The Shield design's bold, high-relief elements placed particular demands on any alloy chosen, as the deeply carved shield lines and raised star points required a metal that could flow into all crevices of the die under striking pressure. Each experimental alloy was evaluated not just for its appearance in the proof state shown here, but for how it would perform under the rapid, high-volume striking conditions of regular production.
