1866 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-475
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Another alloy variant of the adopted Shield Nickel design, J-475 continues the systematic testing program that characterized the 1866 nickel pattern series. The Mint's goal was to produce a coin that was visually distinct from both silver coins and copper cents, resistant to corrosion and wear, easy to strike with good detail, and inexpensive to produce in the quantities demanded by commerce. Each alternative alloy offered different trade-offs among these criteria. The copper-nickel alloy ultimately selected balanced these requirements well — it produced a silvery-white color that distinguished the nickel from copper coins, struck cleanly with acceptable die life, and cost a fraction of silver to produce. This J-475 variant tests one of the competing formulations that was ultimately passed over.
