Description

Near the end of the alternative head design sequence, J-466 represents one of the final non-Shield proposals evaluated for the five-cent denomination. The systematic nature of the Mint's testing program is evident in the methodical progression through Judd numbers — each successive variety typically modifies one design element or tests a different composition, building a comprehensive body of evidence from which to make the final design selection. This pattern's position in the sequence, just before the early shield variants begin at J-467, indicates it may incorporate transitional design elements that bridge the gap between the rejected head types and the emerging shield concept. Proof surfaces reveal the full detail of what become America's everyday nickel.
