Description
Another entry in the extensive pre-adoption design trials for the 1866 five-cent nickel, this proof pattern explores a design variant that was ultimately passed over in favor of the Shield type. The Act of May 16, 1866, authorized a five-cent coin weighing 77.16 grains (5 grams) composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel — the same alloy used for the Indian Head cent since 1859. The choice of this alloy for a new denomination required testing to ensure the dies could produce consistent, well-struck coins at the specified weight and diameter. J-464 represents one of many competing proposals struck in this target alloy, allowing Mint officials to evaluate how different design elements performed when struck in copper-nickel on the 20.5mm planchet designated for the new coin.
