Description

Continuing the sequence of alternative head designs for the proposed five-cent nickel, J-463 tests yet another obverse portrait or design variation. The 1866 nickel pattern series is remarkable for the sheer breadth of designs considered — over seventy Judd numbers were assigned, spanning everything from presidential portraits to abstract symbols to the ultimately victorious Shield motif. This diversity reflects both the importance Congress placed on the new denomination and the creative latitude given to Chief Engraver Longacre. The five-cent nickel was intended to replace the half dime and provide a larger, more practical coin for everyday transactions during a period when silver coins had largely vanished from circulation due to wartime hoarding. Struck in one of the alloy compositions under consideration for the new denomination.
