Description

This proof silver dollar pattern showcases the integration of IN GOD WE TRUST onto the Seated Liberty dollar, the largest standard silver denomination. At 38.1mm and approximately 26.73 grams, the silver dollar provided the most expansive field for motto placement of any silver coin. The obverse features the Seated Liberty figure with flowing gown and liberty cap on a pole, surrounded by thirteen stars and the date 1866 below. The reverse displays the eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows, now bearing the IN GOD WE TRUST motto on a ribbon above. Although silver dollars saw limited domestic circulation by the 1860s due to their silver content exceeding face value, they remained important for international trade and government transactions, making the motto addition a matter of national policy rather than mere numismatic interest.
