Description

Judd-440 represents a historically interesting case in pattern coin cataloging. Originally listed in earlier editions of the Judd reference as an 1865 three-dollar gold pattern, J-440 was subsequently delisted after researchers determined that the attributed specimen was not actually a distinct pattern variety. The coin that had been assigned this number was reclassified under a different Judd number or recognized as a regular issue rather than a pattern. Despite its removal from the active catalog, J-440 remains referenced in older price guides and auction records, and some collections still carry the designation. The three-dollar gold denomination, designed by James B. Longacre and produced from 1854 to 1889, was one of the least popular gold denominations in American numismatic history.

Rarity Notes

Delisted from current editions of the Judd catalog. The coin formerly assigned this number has been reclassified. Historical references to J-440 should be interpreted with caution.
