Description
The 1865 Proof Three Dollar Pattern - J-440 is a proof three-dollar piece struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Civil War Patterns (1860-1865) series. It is a gold restrike of the 1865 three-dollar piece with a reverse on which the date slopes upward; Breen and Judd give the obverse as an 1872 die, while John Dannreuther found it was first used in 1869, and two are known. It is struck in gold with a reeded edge; USPatterns rates it R-8. Catalogued as Judd-440, A/W 480. Cataloged as PCGS #60625.
