Description
Judd-415, Pollock-487, is a copper striking of the three-cent nickel dies with a plain edge, similar in concept to J-411 and J-413 but cataloged separately due to die characteristics. This regular dies trial was struck to test the dies used for regular coinage production and was also created to be sold as part of the off-metal pattern sets that were popular with collectors of the period. The copper composition yields attractive surfaces that range from full original red to deep chocolate brown depending on storage conditions. Fewer than a dozen specimens survive, placing J-415 in the Rarity-7 range. The distinction between J-411, J-413, and J-415 can be subtle and depends on die identification, making careful attribution essential for proper cataloging.
Rarity Notes
Rarity-7. Fewer than 12 specimens extant. Values range from $4,250-$12,500 depending on grade and color. NGC finest: PR65 RB; PCGS finest: PR65 BN.
