1865 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-436
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-436, Pollock-507, is the third 1865 proof dollar motto pattern. By 1865, with the Civil War nearing its conclusion, the Mint was preparing for the post-war resumption of normal coinage operations. The dollar denomination was a priority for design updating because it represented the largest standard silver coin and carried symbolic weight as the national unit of account. This pattern documents one of the final design concepts evaluated before the transition to With Motto production.
