RCD-2c-1865-02R Retained Cud

Description

Corresponding to the same die event documented on the Fancy 5 sub-type, RCD-2c-1865-02R on the 1865 Two Cent Piece with Plain 5 records the second reverse retained cud across the simpler date logotype. The Plain 5 features an unadorned numeral without the curved ornamental flag found on its Fancy 5 companion, and both circulated concurrently during 1865. A retained cud captures a die in its terminal phase — cracked to the rim with a fragment partially separated but lodged, transferring its raised impression onto each planchet. The Two Cent Piece was struck in 95% copper with tin and zinc at Philadelphia exclusively throughout its 1864 to 1873 production life. Its historical distinction as the first coin bearing IN GOD WE TRUST ensures enduring collector interest in every cataloged variety. The second retained cud for the Plain 5 expands the die failure record and, when studied alongside the Fancy 5 counterpart, allows comparison of die behavior across the two date punch sub-types.
