Description

Judd-401, Pollock-472, is the second 1864 proof three-dollar gold motto pattern. This variety presents an alternative motto arrangement on the unusual reverse wreath design of the three-dollar piece. The three-dollar denomination's distinctive agricultural wreath — unlike any other US coin's reverse — posed unique challenges for motto placement that differed from the heraldic eagle reverses of other denominations. The motto would eventually appear on regular three-dollar coins beginning in 1866.

Rarity Notes
