Description

Judd-400, Pollock-471, is the first of three 1864 proof three-dollar gold patterns testing the With Motto design. The three-dollar gold coin, introduced in 1854 with a distinctive Indian Princess obverse, was among the least-circulated denominations in American coinage. These patterns added the motto to the three-dollar reverse, which features a wreath of corn, cotton, tobacco, and wheat. Gold three-dollar patterns are exceptionally rare because the high precious-metal content limited production, and most known specimens are in copper rather than gold.

Rarity Notes

Rarity-7 to R-8. Extremely rare. Most surviving specimens are copper strikings. Estimated 3-5 specimens known.
