Description

Judd-377, Pollock-448, completes the trio of 1864 proof three-cent With Motto patterns. This third and final variety represents the most refined version of the motto design for the three-cent denomination. The three-variety approach was sufficient for a denomination with limited design space, contrasting with the twelve-variety two-cent series and seven-variety half dollar series produced the same year. The With Motto three-cent piece would enter production in 1866 and continue until the denomination's discontinuation in 1873.
