Description

Judd-376, Pollock-447, is the second 1864 proof three-cent With Motto pattern. This variety presents an alternative motto configuration from J-375, testing a different arrangement of the text on the small three-cent reverse. The three-cent piece's diminutive 14mm diameter presented unique challenges for incorporating additional text, and these patterns demonstrate the solutions evaluated by the Engraving Department. The silver three-cent piece was already the smallest US silver coin, making every design element critical for legibility.
