Description

Judd-356b is a proof die trial of the 1864 Indian Head cent in a third compositional variant of the J-356 series, representing the Mint systematic testing of candidate alloys during the decisive year when cent coinage transitioned permanently from copper-nickel to bronze. The b-suffix places this piece third in the J-356 sequence; all share the same obverse and reverse production dies and differ only in metal composition. Proof-quality strikings were prepared to give Treasury and congressional officials the clearest view of design detail, surface quality, and edge sharpness when evaluating proposed compositions. This is the rarest of the J-356 variants with estimated fewer than five examples surviving.

Rarity Notes

R.7 to R.8. The rarest of the J-356 variants. Fewer than five examples known.
