Description

Judd-337, Pollock-389, completes the trio of 1863 proof quarter motto patterns. This third variety rounds out the evaluation of motto placement options for the quarter denomination. The three-variety approach for quarters contrasts with the much larger series for dimes (ten die combinations) and the four-variety series for half dollars, suggesting the quarter presented fewer design challenges or that a preferred solution was identified more quickly. Struck in silver with proof finish to best represent the final intended appearance.
