Description
Judd-324, Pollock-376, is the second 1863 proof half dime pattern, presenting an alternative motto configuration from J-323. Together, these two half dime patterns demonstrate that even the smallest silver denomination received attention in the Mint's systematic motto development program. The half dime's tiny size (15.5mm diameter) meant that any additional text had to be carefully integrated to maintain legibility, and the two varieties test different solutions to this design challenge. The half dime denomination would be discontinued after 1873, replaced by the five-cent nickel piece, but these 1863 patterns show the Mint's intention to modernize all existing denominations with the new motto.
