Description

Judd-323, Pollock-375, is a proof half dime pattern testing a With Motto design for the Seated Liberty half dime denomination. This pattern adds IN GOD WE TRUST or GOD OUR TRUST to the existing Seated Liberty design, previewing the change that would eventually be applied to the half dime in 1866. The obverse features the standard Seated Liberty figure with thirteen stars, while the reverse incorporates the motto into the wreath-and-denomination design. The half dime was the smallest silver denomination, and the limited space on its reverse made motto placement particularly challenging from a design perspective.

Rarity Notes

Rarity-6 to R-7. Approximately 10-15 specimens known. Half dime motto patterns are sought after as precursors to the With Motto design.
