1863 Proof Cent Pattern - J-303
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-303, Pollock-355, is a proof cent pattern testing another experimental alloy or design variation. The prolific cent pattern production of 1863 reflects the urgency of the small-denomination coinage crisis. With copper-nickel cents disappearing from circulation almost as fast as they were produced, the Mint needed to find a solution quickly. Each J-number in the 1863 cent series represents a distinct experiment, whether in composition, design detail, planchet thickness, or edge treatment. The systematic documentation of these experiments through pattern production allowed Mint Director James Pollock and Chief Engraver James B. Longacre to present Congress with concrete options.
